Thailand - Day 1: Natural Disaster

Due to problems on my Internet connection, I've been unable to post anything for the last two weeks. My apologies to all. As promised, the following is the continuation of my solo journey into Thailand.

I believe sometimes in life, in order for a person to achieve their dreams, they have to take a certain degree of risk. The more ambitious the dream, the bigger the risk.

In other words, when I planned to make this trip a reality, I never expected it to be a walk in the park. I'm an optimist, yes, but I'm not an idiot. I knew that this trip was going to be a real adventure, but an adventure is not an adventure if nothing goes wrong. Keeping this mindset helped me keep my cool throughout the rollercoaster ride that lay before me in the days ahead.

As I sat admist the chaos of Puduraya station, waiting for the 'conductor' to call us to board the bus, I silently scan the crowd of people around me, hoping that I find another crazy Malaysian on a similar plan as mine. Nothing. Aside from the usual Mat Salleh backpackers, everybody else seemed to have ordinary or conventional traveling plans. So much for morale boosters.

The bus left Puduraya right on schedule. As planned, I slept through the night journey without incident. When I woke up in the morning, we had not reach the border. Soon after, we reached the border check point and I went through all the formalities without fuss.

But as we crept closer to Hatyai, I soon realized that things were going to be a little difficult. The trip that was supposed to take about 7 hrs, finally took 14hrs. When we finally got off the bus at about 12noon, this was what greeted us:
